The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is the fourth largest Municipal Corporation in India, after the city corporations that administer Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. The BBMP is responsible for infrastructural assets of the Greater Bangalore Metropolitan area, spread across 741 square km, with a population of 6.8 million. Its roles and responsibilities include the “orderly development of the city” — zoning and building regulations, health, hygiene, licensing, trade and education, as well as quality of life issues such as lung spaces, water bodies, parks and greenery.

Bangalore produces more than 3000 tonnes of garbage everyday and effective disposal of this vast amount of waste is a mammoth task for the civic authorities. The problem is further aggravated by being not able to monitor the garbage collections on a daily basis. While neighborhoods complain of the auto tippers not visiting the premises regularly to collect the garbage, the tippers pass the blame back to the residents for not disposing the waste to them and just throwing the garbage beside the road.

According to SN Balasubramaniam, a Bangalore based municipal solid waste management contractor since the last 20 years, “It is always the garbage contractors and poura karmikas who are blamed for the garbage mess. But residents who dump trash at every street corner are equally at blame“.

SN Balasubramaniam along with AssetTrackr, a company which specializes in providing GPS tracking solutions is piloting with BBMP to provide gps tracking for municipal vehicles along with RFID machine and web camera to provide a hi-tech solid waste management solution to the problem.  The pilot will be started in Domlur, during which two mini – tipper trucks will be fitted with the device. Each household will be provided with a RFID card. After handing over the household waste, residents will have to swipe their card, which records the waste as being collected from the respective household.  The pilot will be done for around 2000 houses during which the vehicle will stop at every house between 7am and 2.30 pm. The vehicle trip along with household stoppage time and duration will be captured and displayed on Google Maps by AssetTrackr.

The pilot project has been covered by Bangalore Mirror and please visit this link for further details.
